What is GORD?
Also known as acid reflux, GORD is a common chronic disease and stands for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. GORD occurs when acid leaks from the stomach and enters and moves up into the oesophagus. Acid reflux is a normal body function but when it develops into complications that impacts on quality of life, it becomes GORD.
Although GORD can affect anyone at any age, it is most common in adults 40 and over.
What are the symptoms of GORD?
The most common symptoms of GORD include:
- Heartburn
- Regurgitation
- Chest pain
- Abdominal pain
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing

Can GORD be prevented?
There are lifestyle choices and modifications that will help in the management/prevention of GORD including:
- Weight loss (if you are overweight)
- Sleeping with your head elevated
- Allowing 3 hours before lying down after eating a meal
- Reduced alcohol consumption
- Not smoking
- Avoiding certain foods and liquids including fatty foods, pastries, pies, chocolate, mint, and citrus foods
There are also many effective over the counter antacid therapies that may assist in the management of GORD, depending upon the severity of your symptoms, and these options should be discussed with your GP or pharmacist.
When may GORD require interventional treatment or surgery?
If left untreated, GORD can cause serious complications including oesophageal ulcers, chronic cough and reflux of liquid into the lungs and oesophageal cancer. There are more serious “alarm” symptoms of GORD that should be further investigated which include:
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing
- Blood in your vomit
- Stools that are dark or tarry
- Unintended weight loss
- Anaemia
How is GORD treated surgically?
If your GORD is not able to be managed effectively through conservative treatment you may be recommended to undergo a surgical procedure known as hiatus hernia repair and fundoplication surgery.
Dr Ozmen performs this as a laparoscopic (keyhole) operation. Fundoplication is a proven effective procedure used to correct reflux. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually involves a 1-2 night hospital stay.
