Although weight loss surgery is not a suitable option for everyone, if your endeavours to lose weight with diet and exercise programs have been unsuccessful you may be a suitable candidate. Some typical indications for weight loss surgery are:
- You have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher
- You have a BMI or 35 or more and you have associated health problems relating to excess weight such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea
- You are 18 years or older
Although these are indicators, only an experienced bariatric surgeon is able to advise on your suitability as a candidate and provide options that are matched to your weight loss goals, health and lifestyle.
